What is answer engine optimization?

§1

The short version.

Answer engine optimization is the work of getting a business cited inside AI answers. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot for a recommendation, or types the question into Google and reads the AI Overview at the top of the results, the engine replies with a short answer naming a handful of businesses. AEO is the discipline of earning a place in that answer.

The name copies SEO on purpose. Search engine optimization targeted a page of ranked links. An answer engine doesn't hand the buyer links to sort through. It hands over three or four names with reasons attached, and for a lot of buyers that's the whole shortlist.

§2

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO earns you a position the buyer still has to click through. AEO puts your name in the answer itself. Different work moves each one.

Ranking rewards keywords, backlinks and dwell time. Getting cited rewards being quotable: pages that answer one question directly, structured data a machine can parse without guessing, mentions in the third-party sources the engine already trusts. A site can rank first on Google and still never get named by an answer engine, Google's own AI Overviews included, because the engine built its answer from passages that never mention the firm.

§3

What the engines actually quote.

Engines quote passages of text they trust: editorial round-ups, directories they parse cleanly, forums with real consensus, and the business's own pages when those pages answer questions directly. They name the businesses that keep showing up in that text.

A profile card in a directory is data the engine may or may not use. A sentence saying a firm handled a 4-room BTO reno well is a passage the engine can lift straight into an answer.

§4

What moves AI citations?

Three things, in order: passage-shaped content that answers real buyer questions in the first two sentences, structured data that removes ambiguity about who and where you are, and presence in the external sources the engines quote for your category.

Volume doesn't make up for shape. Ten pages that each answer one question cleanly will beat a hundred pages of brochure copy, because the engine can lift the first kind into an answer. Brochure copy gives it nothing to work with.

§5

How do you know it worked?

You measure how often the engines cite you, before the work and after it, on the same fixed protocol. Anything else is anecdote.

AI answers vary run to run, so a single screenshot can't establish anything. A defensible measurement samples the same buyer questions many times, counts every firm named, and reports citation share with a margin of error. When the rate moves further than the margin of error can explain, something real changed.

Mitra runs this playbook for Singapore interior design firms. The first step is a free measured audit: run the audit on your firm →
